Antique Meiji Era Imari-Style Sushi Porcelain Plates with Gold

$155.00

Because they are unmarked, it is highly likely that this pair of koi fish plates were made during the late Meiji period to the early Showa period (circa 1900–1930s). They are unmarked; the lack of marks help to identify this specific style and period. Beginning in 1900, decorative porcelain wares were produced in the Arita/Imari region for everyday domestic use and Western export. For utilitarian or decorative items like trinket trays, saucers, and small serving plates, factories frequently skipped marking the bases to save time and reduce labor costs. This distinctive hand-painted layout—featuring a central carp (koi) paired with a stylized, flowing blue ribbon or water stream highlighted in gold overglaze—was a highly popular design of the era. These have a distinctive corner detailing.

In Japanese pottery, square shapes with clipped or indented corners are called sumikiri (corner-cut). This shape mimics traditional lacquerware serving trays used in kaiseki and ceremonial meals to soften harsh geometric lines. Light shines through the porcelain in the flat part of the plate, confirming it is not plain ceramic or stoneware.

These plates feature rich colors of the period, including orange-red, cobalt, pearl grey, and brown with a lustrous gold enamel overlay. There are no chips, cracks, crazing, color or paint loss, nor rubs, skips, or flaws. A few tiny dots under the glazing are attributed to the handcrafted process of painting. The unfinished bottom is gritty, signaling the plates sat in sand in the kiln, helping to date the pieces. The plates are 4 1/2 inches along one side and measure 5 inches diagonally. They are diamond-shaped rather than square. They are about 1 inch deep and have decorative marks in blue on the sides. It is rare to find ornate plates from this period in such excellent condition. The price is for the pair and includes free shipping with insurance.
