Vintage Black Star Sapphire Set -- 10K Gold Necklace & Earrings

This incredible handmade midcentury 10K yellow gold jewelry set features an untreated natural black star sapphire pendant necklace and matching screw-back black star sapphire earrings. The dangling heart-shaped design is perfect for Valentine's Day or for a gift for someone you truly cherish. The chain is 18 inches and the pendant cabochon sapphire is deep and large, with bronze hues within the translucent and luminous black. This sapphire cabochon is particularly large and deep. Black star sapphires display a unique optical phenomenon called asterism, which is a star-shaped pattern that appears in the gemstone when viewed under a direct light source. This effect is caused by needle-like inclusions of minerals like rutile or hematite within the sapphire's crystal structure. The stones are typically cut into a smooth, domed shape called a cabochon to properly showcase the star effect.

With a direct light source such as a penlight or sunlight, the classic six-rayed star can be seen in the pendant stone and both earring sapphires (pictured). The pendant is nearly one inch long. The black star sapphire in the pendant is quite large; it is oval and very thick (pictured). The matching earrings are just over an inch long.
